Before joining The Gomez Law Firm, Bob Knaier spent several years at Latham & Watkins LLP, one of the largest law firms in the world. While there, he represented corporate defendants accused of, among other things, causing personal injury by releasing toxic substances into the environment, and engaging in fraud and other forms of commercial misconduct. Bob’s expertise in these areas, along with his educational and life experiences outlined below, uniquely position him to understand and provide high quality representation to people—from all walks of life—who have suffered harm.
Bob was raised in a modest suburb of Buffalo, New York, the son of a union electrician and an occupational therapy assistant. As a young man, he attended Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, a trade school in Arizona. After graduating first in his class, Bob moved to San Diego and spent several years working in the motorsports industry, first as a mechanic and then as a service advisor.
While working full-time for a large San Diego motorsports dealership, Bob first completed a degree in Philosophy at Grossmont College, earning a perfect grade point average and graduating with honors, and then attended the University of California, San Diego, where he completed his B.A. in Philosophy, with a minor in Law & Society. He graduated summa cum laude and received the Muir Scholar Award for being one of the top seven graduates of UCSD’s John Muir College.
Bob then attended Cornell Law School, where he developed a passion for the ways in which the law responds to harms suffered by ordinary people. He earned the highest grade in his class in Torts, Constitutional Law, Products Liability, and Problems in Advanced Torts; was inducted into the prestigious Order of the Coif; and graduated magna cum laude, among the very top students in his class.
Bob went on to secure highly sought after positions after law school. Prior to joining Latham & Watkins, he spent one year as a law clerk for the Honorable Richard C. Wesley at the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, learning the workings of the federal appellate system, analyzing appeal briefs, and preparing Judge Wesley to rule on cases of significant import.
Bob also cares about and is an active member of the local community. He has dedicated substantial time to providing pro bono legal services to the poor in San Diego, volunteers his time to assist local law students in their education, regularly speaks and publishes on various legal topics, and supports several local charitable groups. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the San Diego County Bar Association, the William B. Enright Inn of Court, the Casa Cornelia Inn of Court, Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, the American Motorcyclist Association, and—as an animal lover—the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the San Diego Zoological Society’s President’s Associates.
In his spare time, Bob enjoys spending time with his wife, with his pets, and at the gym. He also continues to enjoy riding and working on his motorcycles.
